Fabric choice is the most important decision in curtain selection — more important than colour, pattern, or heading style. The fabric determines how your curtains drape, how they filter light, how they age, and how much maintenance they require. Here's everything you need to know.
Velvet
Velvet is the luxury choice for curtains. Its dense pile creates beautiful, deep folds and has natural blackout properties. Velvet absorbs sound, making it excellent for bedrooms and home theatres. The downside: it's heavy (requiring robust hardware), attracts dust, and requires professional dry cleaning. Best for: master bedrooms, formal living rooms, home theatres.
Linen
Linen has a natural, relaxed elegance that suits both contemporary and traditional interiors. It drapes beautifully and improves with age, developing a soft patina. Linen is breathable and relatively easy to wash (though it wrinkles easily). It provides moderate light filtering but needs lining for blackout performance. Best for: living rooms, dining rooms, casual bedrooms.
Pro tip: Linen curtains will shrink slightly when first washed. Order 5% extra length to account for this.
Cotton
Cotton is the most versatile curtain fabric. It takes dye beautifully (offering the widest colour range), is easy to wash, and works in almost any room. Cotton drapes well but is lighter than velvet or linen, so it needs more fullness (2.5–3x window width) for a luxurious look. Best for: children's rooms, casual living spaces, any room where easy washing is a priority.
Polyester & Blends
Modern polyester fabrics have come a long way from the synthetic look of previous decades. High-quality polyester blends mimic the appearance of natural fibres while offering superior durability, colour fastness, and ease of care. For Bangalore's climate — with its dust and humidity — polyester blends are often the most practical choice. Best for: any room, especially high-traffic areas.
Silk
Silk curtains are the ultimate luxury statement. The natural sheen and drape of silk is unmatched by any synthetic alternative. However, silk is delicate, fades in direct sunlight, and requires professional dry cleaning. It's best reserved for formal rooms that don't receive direct sun. Best for: formal dining rooms, guest bedrooms, statement windows.
Choosing the Right Weight
Fabric weight affects drape, light filtering, and hardware requirements. Lightweight fabrics (voile, sheer linen) create soft, flowing curtains but provide minimal privacy or light control. Medium-weight fabrics (cotton, linen, polyester) are the most versatile. Heavyweight fabrics (velvet, chenille, brocade) create dramatic, structured curtains but require heavy-duty hardware.
